UNEMPLOYMENT: A SERIOUS SOCIAL PROBLEM

Nigeria today is being threatened with unemployment as a serious social problem and the country needs to provide adequate facilities in other for youths to put their talents into absolute use for the good of the society. Unemployment in a state which people of a nation are jobless, when they have already finished their secondary and tertiary education.

Some might have good results and still end up as hawkers in the streets. This is very bad the society because the knowledge acquired is not put into practice. Some might roam about the streets for some years before getting lucrative jobs. This is being caused by so many nefarious activities like corruption, the ‘who you know syndrome’ and also condition that attached to the securing of the job.
Also, unemployment as a threat to the social activities of the country makes the country full of never do well because when youths are confronted with poverty and unemployment, they resort to engaging in obnoxious activities including criminal activities in order to get money by all means, which will tarnish the image of the country and lead to self-destruction.

This is very serious social problem and effective solution must be taken to reduce or even absolutely eradicate this dreadful problem of unemployment in Nigeria. Most of the political thugs in our society today are the products of the evil of unemployment. They see thuggery as a profitable venture, hence none of them is interested in any honourable job that nonetheless does not exist.

Another evil of unemployment is the social menace of husbands becoming incapacitated in their duties as the head of the family, they then become ‘wife’ as a result of unemployment. When this continues for a long time, women become uncontrollable by their husbands and this leads to families breaking up. What does the society gain from this? Increase in population of single women and the resultant in prostitution and abandoned babies.

In the light of the above mentioned evils of unemployment as a serious problem, the government should endeavour to establish a youth camp where juvenile delinquents would be rehabilitated and trained on a particular trade that they could be influenced into becoming successful. Enough job opportunity should be made available for the youths and adult so as to be less dependent on the government.

Women should be educated or well informed of their positions as wives and mothers so as to see the need to assist their husbands in catering for the family, where all these suggestions are put into consideration, I hope the society would be helped out of the evils of unemployment.
